Mandriva Linux 2010 – Very Impressive

,----[ Quote ]
| Mandriva, in my opinion, has the best KDE
| implementation around. They proved it once
| again with this release. The KDE edition is
| just awesome. I have not looked at the
| GNOME edition yet. Having used Mandriva’s
| GNOME edition for the past year and a half,
| I think that would be just as great. I am
| anyway giving it a spin in the coming days.
| I would definitely recommend Mandriva 2010
| to any one who wants to get started with
| Linux or try out a great distribution.

| Altogether Mandriva seems to have a good

Mandriva 2010 packs a punch

| One of the more interesting features of

| Using the task widget and the Tasktop

If there's one Linux distribution people should get behind, it's
Mandriva.  They seem to understand what people want from an Operating
System.  A derivative of Mandriva, PCLinuxOS  is the absolute best for
out-of-the-box experience.

How is it any better than

Debian,
Ubuntu,
Kubuntu
Mint
Fedora
Gentoo

etc etc

?

Please be specific.

He has made a claim about "yet another distro" and why people should
drop their current one and go with that one.

Yet he didn't offer a SINGLE REASON why we should.

It might be enough for a simpleton like yourself, but not for many. We
would like to hear his reasons for "advocating" his distro of the day
over many other more entrenched distributions.

Why don't you enlighten us, oh enlightened one. Or is it because you
simply don't like KDE, the default WM in Mandriva?

I moved NO goal posts. So, lets recap :

He tells people Mandriva rocks and people should move.

I ask for reasons why.

You appear flapping around.

I repeat the request for reasons WHY he thinks we should move.

You then tell ME to "enlighten us".

I remind you that it was NOT me making claims about Mandriva.

No goal posts moved.

No requests changed.

All that happened is that you came in, shilled by Dumb Willy, got lost
in your own fanboi flappings as you got carried away and are now
stranded high and dry with no where to go.

Why dont YOU tell us why people should move then?

Go on. "Advocate" Mandriva. I need a good laugh.

Mandriva is not "yet another distro". They have been around for over 10
years. I used them (as Mandrake) between Debian (my first) and
Ubuntu/Mint. I will check out Mandriva 2010 for sure. Looks like something
I would want to consider using.

Again, Mandriva is an old established distro. What brought me to stop
using it was the confusing business practices they implemented a few years
ago. It was some club you needed to pay to be a member of to get to
download certain non-free software. They ended up having several editions
and I could never really get what I needed to get. The concept was too
complicated for me to get into, so I went to Ubuntu.

That's nice.

But meanwhile we are looking for why this poster thinks people should
jump ship from one distro to move to this one.

So far not one single reason offered up.

I get bored with Hardon's predictable insults. 'Idiot', 'fanboi'(I do
wish he would learn how to spell in proper English), 'moron', 'useless',
etc. Clearly he needs a course in English literature, then he would be
able to insult everyone without coming across as a semi literate plonker!

FWIW: Mandriva is my distribution of choice, and has been for many years.
Before that, I used Red Hat/Fedora.
Some of the things I like about Mandriva:
- Very easy installation
- Very easy extension of package sources to include non-free stuff
- Huge software choice
- Excellent hardware support
- Decent update system(*) -- I can't even remember when an update broke
something

I haven't checked out recently how other distributions perform in the areas
I mentioned, but in the past, Mandriva surpassed Fedora on several points,
most particularly ease of installation and package management.

*: There's one thing I don't like at all about the update system, and that's
the way version upgrades are offered/handled since the introduction of
2009.0, one year ago -- it suffered from similar problems we now see with
Ubuntu. I fixed this for my users by disabling the upgrade notification on
their system, but I think it can do with some significant redesigning.

Nobody suggests that people should drop their current distro and start using
Mandriva 2010, any more than people are expected to dump XP and move to
Vista7.
The report just concludes that it's an excellent Linux distribution, which
deserves the praise and attention it gets -- something I can wholeheartedly
agree with.
When people are happy with their current operating system and/or
distribution and/or distribution version, there's no reason to switch.
Most of my users still use Mandriva 2008.1 because they like it, and because
they're familiar with it. The newer KDE versions have quite a different
look and feel, and have several different applications for key functions
that takes some getting used to. Also, a lot of my users still have older
hardware, which isn't very suitable for the higher demands of KDE 4.x (such
as a bare minimum of 512MB RAM, compared to 256MB for KDE 3.5).
I myself have 2009.1 running on an EeePC, and just did some test installs of
2010.0 on new machines, with positive results (as in: it simply works).

It's different in that Mandriva is always begging for money and trying to
foist those fluendo CODECS on unsuspecting users.
For a charge of course.

Mandriva = the Beggars Linux distribution.

No wonder it's Roy Schestowitz's Linux of choice.
They have a lot in common.
