should have to resize their viewports to rein in long lines. Maximum
widths expressed in em units scale along with the font size. I'd err
on the side of the larger max-width for the sake of those who prefer
to read slightly longer lines. I expect no one prefers to read lines

No one is suggesting a max-width in pixels (I hope), but setting
one in ems is entirely reasonable.

Why impose your own personal limits on your viewer?
Lets say your viewer is very poorly sighted and likes to have her text 50
pixels high and everything fits nicely and readably on her 1583 pixel wide
browser window.
Then you waltz in and impose some arbitrary limit, say 1000 pixles, on her
"viewport". What then? You have stuffed up her viewing enjoyment. And to

I haven't seen it catching on, and I hope it doesn't. I read a book
on the screen just as I read a book in dead-tree format.
What's wrong with "read online" or "read on-screen"?
