Be eely nice
Eel populations in London's River Thames crash by 98% [link] European eel populations are under threat. These catadromous fishes are vulnerable because of their life cycle - born at the depths of the Sargasso Sea - and then a long migration to European shores as leptocephalus larvae where they undergo metamorphosis to enter freshwater. They then migrate inland having to negotiate physical and chemical barriers to reach their freshwater home. Years later they get the urge to return to sea and swim back to the Sargasso Sea where they reproduce and die.... more »
