Sadly and very traumatically for patients and staff the in-patients
beds of Westbury Hospital were closed on Sunday morning. Staff and
patients were given only 5 days notice and it would be difficult for
the community to envisage how the PCT could have managed the transfer
of patients in a more damaging way. One terminally ill patient was at

Over the past year I have covered several potential community hospital
closures for Pulse, the GPs' newspaper, and I am looking to continue my
coverage in 2006. If anyone has any particular issues that come up this
year, please get in touch.
See: tinyurl.com/b89c3 and [link] or
tinyurl.com/8r3an for recent examples.

The Chief Executive for West Wiltshire PCT has responded to the White
Paper by announcing that the planned closure of community hospitals in
West Wiltshire will continue - her interpretation of the paper is that
Patricia Hewitt agrees with WW closure programme and that her vision to
close Westbury Hospital will be implemented without the public

 Hello
I'm planning a feature about community/ cottage hospital closures for
the BBC Action Network site. I'd like to speak to someone who has been
involved in organising the protests against closures in Cumbria. Can
anyone point me in the right direction?
Kind regards
Ruth Penycate
[link]

Just to draw everybody's attention to an excellent article by Libby P
in yesterday's Times, publicising the lack of response from their PCT
to the local community's solution to keep the beds at Aldeburgh Cottage
Hospital open. Our problem is similar, if a few years down the line,
to theirs: we also have received no support from our PCT to a local

 Hello there
Action Network is a BBC website for people who are taking action on
issues that concern them. I'm getting in touch because I think it could
be useful to people campaigning about hospital closures. We've got a
page dedicated to issues around hospitals
([link]) and a group called NHS

You can learn more about the history of our hospital at Wiki.
The hospital which also houses all the Community services is now under
even more threat as the announced closure on Aug 31st (with NO
consultation) has prompted many staff to look for jobs elswhere and
many of our experienced clinical and ancilliary staff have been

I must say that when I and Reg Wenn
visited Westminster on Tuesday we found it not to be a wheelchair
friendly place, which is ironic considering all the wheelchair-friendly
legislation pouring from it's portals.
