I see it's on the list of stores that are closing (the parent company called in the receivers last week). Won't leave Cambridge short of off-licences, but apparently they are having a sale to get rid of the stock. -- Roland Perry

Wine Rack is part of a large group of off licences which if IIRC includes Threshers, Victoria Wines, Local and quite possibly other high street names.
I went into Threshers in Godmanchester yesterday as they were supposedly having a closing down sale with 25% off stock. I thought I'd take advantage of the sale, being in need of a bottle of halfway decent champagne as a 'thank you' for someone who did me a big favour recently!
I thought I might also stock up on a few treats for crimbo
In I went and took a look at the selection of pop on offer, several branded bottles - Veuve, Moet, Tattinger, Lanson. I enquired as to the price of the Veuve (standard non vintage variety) and was told that it was forty odd quid. They quickly added that that didn't include the discount. I asked if they were selling much and they unsurprisingly said no!
Whilst looking for the champagne I noticed that they had my personal favourite cava - Freixenet Cordon Negro at £12.99 a bottle - less 25% = £9.75. Even Waitrose sell it for under £9.
I didn't analyse the prices of the rest of their stock but I'd hazard a guess that bargains may have been a bit thin on the ground.
Anyone seen anywhere in the area with a promotion on champagne??

Their pricing structure appears to have been designed so that they could market everything in store as a "3 for 2" offer with ludicrous single bottle prices so that the 'offer' price would in fact be the same as everywhere else. It surprising is how long they managed to stay in business using this model.

I was in Morrisons on Friday picking up 300 small finger rolls for the hot dogs at the village fireworks and took a look at the offerings in the champagne section - unfortunately there was nothing on promotion that leapt out as a bargain :o(
