Best Insurance Deal? Vehicle Identity Check (VIC)

Having now sent in my IVA application, insurance is next on the list.
What is the general opinion on who provides the best offer?
I have had one quote from Footman James against Beauford Owners Club membership, which matches the special arrangement achieved by the Quantum Owners Club after much negotiation, which did not give that much benefit for senior members but under-30's got a great deal, sufficient to make sports car ownership affordable - does that mean that other clubs may have benefited from the efforts there? An Adrian Flux web quote is yet to come back after two attempts - no option for "Retired" or "pensioner" under their job specs!

Does anyone know what is the procedure now for the quick look-see that used to be undertaken by the local DVLA office before accepting the details on the initial registration form?
I notice that there is now a separate item defined as a Vehicle Identity Check (VIC) billed at ~ £41 now only available at the same centres as undertake IVA. I have scanned both DVLA and VOSA sites on this matter and found plenty on new parts vehicles and repaired vehicles but could not find anything definitive about kit cars made from second hand components i.e.donor parts. The item on how to register your car still refers to the SVA test and as far as I can make out states incorrect fees.

When I was looking for someone to paint our Beauford, we talked to a guy at Littlehampton whose business is making replica Formula 1 fibreglass racers. He was adamant that fibreglass needs to be baked at about 40° C for around two days to release any inbuilt gasses and trapped moisture or else it was likely to produce the bubbles described below. He may well have been right but as he wanted in excess of £5k to do the job I developed a serious attack of the wallet and went elsewhere where the guys left the car and parts in the spray booth for up to a week at this temperature to do the same, but at no extra cost.

Sir,
If glassfibre is not prepared correctly, prior to painting, bubbles may
occur. Sometimes the glass has to be 'de-greased' for paint to adhere.
I have not heard of the problem previously; I wonder if your vehicle has
been re-painted in the past which is causing this problem? Over the years

Fault caused by lack of bonding between paint and fibreglass.
Usually due to the lack of self etching or etching primer not being used
between the paint and fibreglass.
Cure complete strip back to fibreglass.
Repaint using self etching primer as first coat.

Also sounds like car not garaged this will accelerate problem.

I have a Beauford built around 16 years ago and it has just developed
a case of the measles.
A large number of bubbles have appeared on the fibreglass panels and
when pushed, water comes out.
This would appear to be similar to osmosis, that fibreglass boats tend
to suffer from.
Has anyone else had this problem, a local bodywork shop seems to think

Firstly you need to determine whether the loom is from the Cortina
donor, a professionally made one or one home made as the car was
built.
If from a Cortina then get hold of a workshop manual of the correct
year, if professional then try premier, svc or others, if home made
one then its anyones guess which pattern the builder followed.

Folks,
Whilst I do not usually wish to be associated with many of the petitions that go the rounds due to their ill founded notions and poor research, this one does get me as all of my fleet comes into this category.
In reality, the number of "older" cars is dwindling at such a rate and the use of those that remain is small compared to that of more recent passenger cars and commercial vehicles, the impact on pollution of the atmosphere is probably now small to insignificant compared to the general vehicle parc.

Thanks to everyone that has replied. I have opted for the Renovo full
treatment kit as this seems to be the one most highly recommended.
We have 5 cars and I will photograph before and after pictures on each

I agree in replacing the hoods. I have replaced three on my cars and will be
replacing the fourth this next season. I believed that you must keep up the
appearance of the cars and if the hood has faded so much then you have had
the best used out of it. Always a chance it might start leaking. Obviously

I am finally at a stage where I am "cleaning-up prior to SVA and have started to attack the Hood in general and the rear screens.
Having fitted an additional framework to enable rear lap diagonal belts to be used - grandsons child seat now has to have lap diagonal fittings to be legal - I am in a position where the conventional arrangement for the folding framework will not work. In consequence, I have removed the rivet from the hinged section, slotted the top of the upright, tapped the other frames for M8 and can now remove the Z plate with the side screens. This opens up a number of possibilities and, before I finalise the design, I would welcome comments from those who have been this route before.

Thanks for the tips! My Beauford is fast approaching the point where SVA would be possible once I have recovered from a hernia op and any tips are really worth having.
For any others are intending to prove the age of the engine taken from your main donor, it is worth while checking that the V5b of the donor has the correct engine number registered in it, if you actually have that document. I just happened to notice that the donor's engine number was completely different from that in the V5b and sent in the number on the front of the engine (that according to Haynes should be its identity number) to DVLA, who took about a month to agree to change it but eventually did, so hopefully handing over the donor V5b should be sufficient as I have a non-emissions August 92 donor, the time when new models had to have catalysts fitted but old models were given a year of grace to clear the stock. Maybe this is not so easy if you buy a separate engine.

Had my SVA today at Norwich because Chelmsford is being refitted.
The car failed on three points.
1. flexible brake pipes on the front touched the wheel on full lock,
my mistake for not checking.
2. Unable to prove the date of the engine, this being a 2.4 Nissan
engine, circa 1982.
I never had the log book and although the examiner agreed it was old,

Having built a Beauford with the 2.4 injected engine that turned out very successfully I would suggest that you use the wiring loom from the original car if at all possible. I found this worked very well and is also adaptable for the rest of the on board ancillarys. I have some diagrams should you require them. Tony.

I have all the wiring diagrams for the 240Z including the full Nissan service manual for the electronic fuel injection, but it runs to about 100 pages and covers all the engines in the range.

I've got the Nissan Fuel Injection Workshop Manual for the 2.8 engine from
the 280ZX which includes wiring diagrams and test procedures for each component
in the injection system.
Whether this is the same as for the 2.4 engine is another matter as I
thought all 2.4's were on carbs.
What is your problem exactly?

I used Volvo 340 seats in my 2 door Beauford because they tip forwards and
inwards to give good access to the rear seat. They are also very comfortable! I
removed the "skeletal" headrests and had the seats recovered in leather. The
rear seat armrest from the same car was incorporated into the plywood

I have fitted Jaguar XJ6 electric seats with no mods (other than slight angling to avoid the B-post supports) to the front but had to cut the width down on the rear seats and make a wooden cradle to take the horizontal squab - a bit like a Mirror dinghy combined with the wire frame. Not for the faint hearted or those with no wish to alter the leather upholstery.

They'r quite a tight fit and needed some raising off the floor for my
short body, but they tilt inwards towards the middle as well as

Max, I used a Premier wiring loom on a sierra based Datsun engined
autobox Beauford. They included wiring for the autobox when asked.
I fitted it with no problems, it mated to the column stalks, the
instruction were clear and spot on.
I managed to wire the car, with everything working fine without
blowing any fuses.
