7. This week's top 50:
Welcome to one of the most exciting weekly singles charts in a
very long time. There are not one, but two top 5 debuts, both
from high profile artists who create new personal chart records
for themselves this week. In addition, there are another 3 debuts
in the top 50 plus a massive record-breaking bullet performer,
achieving a feat never seen before in modern chart history.
It really doesn't get much better than this!
Firstly, let's skip over the two new top 5 entries and after 7
weeks non-consecutive weeks at number one, David Guetta's "Sexy
Bitch" slips down to number 2 this week. This in turn pushes the
Black Eyed Peas back from their number 2 peak last to number 3 this
week.
New into the top 10 is Britney Spears with "3" - the only new
recording added to her soon to be released album "The Singles
Collection". Last week, "3" debuted at number 50 and this week it
makes a massive surge, bulleting 43 spots to number 7. So when was
the last time a single bulleted up 43 or more spots within the top
50? Well, it's never happened before in ARIA chart history, with
the closest occuring back in June 1992 when George Michael's "Too
Funky" rocketted from number 50 to 8, a climb of 42 spots, one spot
short of matching the chart feat of Britney Spears this week.
Dropping out of the top 10 is the Jay-Z and Rihanna collaboration
"Run This Town" which lasted just 2 weeks in the top 10 and slips
back from number 9 to 14 this week. Also dropping out of the top
10 is Kate Miller-Heidke's former top 3 smash "The Last Day On
Earth" and The Script with "Before The Worst" which lasted
just one week in the top 10.
Beyonce still has 4 hits in the top 40 thanks to her Australian
tour last month, and on the albums chart "I Am...Sasha Fierce"
returns to its peak position of number 3, having clocked up
double-platinum sales since its release in November last year.
Debuting at number one on the albums chart is Michael Buble's
"Crazy Love" album which has caused the album's first single
"Haven't Met You Yet" to re-enter the top 50 and reach a new
peak of number 33.
So now let's look at those 5 new entries on the singles chart,
including those two which crashed straight into the top 5. Now,
the last time we had two top 5 debuts was over 2 years ago, back
in September 2007, when Delta Goodrem's "In This Life" debuted at
number one, followed by Timbaland's "The Way I Are" at number 5.
Of course, for exciting action in the top 5, who can forget the
events of the last week in January 2005 when a whopping 4 singles
debuted in the top 5, or extending the scope a little, we had an
amazing 6 debuts all within the top 10.
1. THIS IS WHO I AM - Vanessa Amorosi
CD single: #1
Digital track: #1
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEZf6gLnL3c
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/la8tns
Artist website: www.vanessaamorosi.com
27 year-old Melbourne singer and song-writer Vanessa Amorosi
returns to the charts, bigger than ever. Over 10 years ago,
in mid-1999, the then 17 year-old VCE student from Emerald
Secondary College in the scenic Dandenong Ranges on Melbourne's
outskirts, released her debut commercial single titled "Have A
Look". This rock song peaked at number 13 and enjoyed a
marathon 18 week run in the top 50. In late 1999, she did
a surprise switch in musical style, releasing the pop/dance
track "Absolutely Everybody" as her second single. That
song was huge, reaching number 6 and spending over 3 months
in the top 10 and 28 big weeks in the top 50. She later
performed that song at the closing ceremony of the Olympic
Games in Sydney in 2000, resulting in huge exposure that
saw the release of that song internationally. It went top
10 across much of Europe including the U.K. During 2000,
she also released the inspirational ballad "Shine" which
became her highest charting single up till then, peaking
at number 4, followed by her fourth single "The Power"
which gave her yet another top 10 hit in early 2001. All
those singles featured on her "The Power" album which debuted
at number one and sold 4-times platinum.
After Vanessa's huge success with her first album, the only
way forward was downwards it appeared. The follow-up
mix of studio and compilation albums "Turn To Me" (2001),
"Change" (2002) and "The Best of Vanessa Amorosi" (2005)
failed to make an impact.
2008 was a remarkable turning point in Vanessa's career.
Her "Somewhere In The Real World" album reached number 4 and
was a gold seller. The album spawned the single "Kiss Your
Mama!" which peaked at number 15, but was soon followed up by
the single "Perfect" which went all the way to number 4 and
ended up as the most played song on Australian radio during
that year.
Vanessa's new album is titled "Hazardous" and it will be
released next month. First track off the album is "This
Is Who I Am" which has been enjoying huge radio support
during its 6 weeks of airplay prior to release. This
rock-oriented song has made the ultimate debut, coming in at
number one this week, giving Vanessa her first ever
chart-topping single and eclipsing the huge start to her career
that she enjoyed over 10 years ago.
Vanessa Amorosi is only the third Australian artist to have
had a number one single in 2009, joining Jessica Mauboy with
"Burn" and Guy Sebastian with "Like It Like That", with both
of those artists having first gained exposure on Australian
Idol in previous years. Excluding artists associated with
Australian Idol, Vanessa is the first Australian to hit number
one since Gabriella Cilmi's "Sweet About Me" in June last year.
In 2009, only two singles have debuted at number one - Flo
Rida's "Right Round" and Vanessa's hit this week is the second.
Vanessa is also the first Australian artist to debut at number
one on the singles chart since 2007 when 4 locals did it -
Silverchair with "Straight Lines", Missy Higgins with "Steer",
Delta Goodrem with "In This Life" and Kylie Minogue with
"2 Hearts".
4. BODIES - Robbie Williams
CD single: #9
Digital track: #4

The huge hits keep coming, and debuting right up at number 4
this week is Robbie Williams. The 35 year-old British singer
and song-writer was part of the pop group Take That between
1989 and 1995, but he then left the band to lauch his solo
career. Internationally, his solo success has generally been
impressive. He is reported to have sold 55 million albums
world-wide and has won more BRIT Awards than any other artist
ever has. He's also enjoyed a couple of very successful
collaborations, both with Australians, those being Kylie
Minogue in 2000 with "Kids" and Nicole Kidman in 2001
with "Somethin' Stupid". Robbie has now had 7 top 10
hit singles in Australia out of a total of 21 singles
that made the top 50. On the albums chart he's had even more
success, with a string of multi-platinum releases including
2002's 5-times platinum selling "Escapology" and his massive
8-times platinum selling "Greatest Hits" album from 2004.
Robbie's last album was the 2006 release "Rudebox" which had
him adopt a more electronic sound. Now, three years later,
he's back to his more traditional trademark pop sound on his
new album "Reality Killed the Video Star". The album's
first single is the track "Bodies" which has been going
gangbuster on charts around the world. It has just debuted at
number 2 in the UK and has gone top 5 on an increasing number
of charts across Europe. Here in Australia, "Bodies" debuts at
number 4, riding a huge wave of radio support simulatenously
with Vanessa Amorosi's "This Is Who I Am". "Bodies" now
becomes Robbie's equal-highest charting hit single ever
in Australia, matching the number 4 peak of "Rock DJ" from
September 2000. The music video for "Bodies" was filmed in
the Mojave Desert which surrounds the huge city of Las Vegas
in the American state of Nevada.
44. HAPPY - Leona Lewis
CD single: (not released yet)
Digital track: #39
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-SqH1QI4Ak
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/yhsec5b
Artist website: www.leonalewis.co.uk
The third new single of the week comes from 24 year-old
English singer and song-writer, Leona Lewis. She won the
2006 series of the British TV talent show "The X Factor",
and her first studio album, "Spirit", debuted at number
one when released here last year. From that album came
the 5 week number one single "Bleeding Love" and that
ballad was followed up by the top 10 smash "Better In
Time". Her second album, "Echo", will be released shortly
and from that comes her brand new single titled "Happy"
which debuts at number 44 this week.
49. HALO / WALKING ON SUNSHINE - Glee Cast
CD single: (not released yet)
Digital track: (not in top 40)
Artist website: www.fox.com/glee/
More music from the American musical comedy and drama TV series
"Glee". There was "Don't Stop Believin'" last month and a
cover of Rihanna's "Take A Bow" a couple of weeks ago. Now
this week we see a mash-up of Beyonce's "Halo" and Katrina
& The Waves' "Walking On Sunshine" become their latest hit,
debuting at number 49.
50. SILLY BOY - Eva Simons
CD single: (not released yet)
Digital track: (not in top 40)
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=okff4h9GM50
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/ygjln35
Artist website: www.evasimons.com
Final new entry in this big week of chart action goes to Eva
Simons. This 23 year-old vocalist from The Netherlands was
the winner of the Dutch version of the TV reality show
"Popstars" in 2004 as part of the all girl group Raffish.
The group released an album locally which gave them a few
hits, but the band split up in 2006. Her debut solo album
will be released next year, but in the meantime that album's
first single is the electro-pop track "Silly Boy" which debuts
at number 50 this week.
