Ok, look lets get real about this.
In defining just exactly what a newbie is.
If you just heard about FreeBSD this morning, decided to download it from
the FreeBSD site at noon, and by supper you had it set up, as a server with
xwindows, YOUR NOT A NEWBIE!!!
If you ask a question in this newsgroup and you get an answer and you
understood it your not a newbie.
If your questions have more code than words your not a newbie.
And if everyone thinks these people are newbies then we need to have
different classes of newbies. Or sub classes. Lets say Loser class. L
And depending on how big a newbie loser L+ L++ ect.
You see when you first join this newsgroup, you are automaticly considered
a newbie. It's a gimme.
But soon as you write something, you can be put in your proper class of
newbie. Yeah.. You can go down from newbie. And have to work your way
back up to newbie.
lets take MsWindows.
I get the box, Plug it in, Hey! It works. Lets see clickety click
clickety click clickety click. oh yeah.
notpad. I am a computer guru. Wonder what it does?
After a while I hear about Unix linix and FreeBSD, and decide to check it
out.
Download image? Have to do something special to get it? clickety click
does not work?
I wonder how many of us have bought microsoft books just in the hopes it
will explain what these Unix guys are talking about in thier foriegn
dialect of english?
READ THE FAQ! THE MAN PAGES YOU LOSER! Get real. Every single one of
us has downloaded the faq, the man pages, printed them out, read them over
and over.
I have more money tied up in books I don't understand than I have in my
car.
Microsoft Book: DO NOT USE SCREWDRIVER TO REMOVE THE COVER OF YOUR
COMPUTER AND SUCK ON THE ELECTRICAL COMPONETS INSIDE!! IT WILL KILL YOU!!!
See I understood that. Microsoft was talking to me. It insults most
people, but they understand it.
Unix Book: Have you used screwdriver to remove the cover of your computer
and sucked on the electrical componets yet? (Then you have two chapters of
tech. jargon that no newbie will ever consider reading let alone
understanding, before the book says not to do it. So he's going to focus
on "Have you used screwdriver to remove the...ect..".......Zap!
Microsoft caters to the Loser market. They do not even consider you may
have two brain cells to rub together. Or if you do, they assume one of the
cells belong to your hamster that's conveniently duct taped to your
computer, in easy reach, when you click on your favorite newsgroup.
On the other hand Unix wants to kill the Losers. Just look at the BOFH
stories.
DIE DIE DIE Before you reproduce, you loser. IhaveO'Reilly's 4.4bsd books.
I opened up the O'reilly books and I felt like I was reading it upsidedown.
Just open it up and look at that Permuted Index. I couldnt concentrate.
The damn book was upsidedown. There is so much technical stuff in there
I'll bet if you pluged a monitor and keyboard into it, you would find out
it is an artificial intellegence unto itself. It has achieved
conciousness.
I have no life, I'm in Hell. Yeah that's it, in Hell.
Should I go to alt.rel.emacs and lay my sins down, in the hopes he will
consider me worthy to achieve Unix? Or if by praying to emacs with a
Heathen Browser, he will cast me back into the pit of microsoft?
Am I doomed to foreaver wonder these newsgroups and surf all 20million unix
sites in the hopes one will give me a kernel of truth I can work with? Or
is alt.suicide.holiday my only excape?
But just perhaps someone will write a book i can understand, Made of cloth
so it can be washed and won't get ruined when I chew on it. One page.
starting out "Get screwdriver and open...."
