Subject: Remember Y2K?

Y2K was the greatest hoax of the 20th century.

Climate change looks like being the greatest hoax of the 21st century!

November 4 2009

The cult back then comprised computer experts.

They predicted disaster.

Planes would fall from the skies.

People would be caught in halting elevators.

Chaos would descend on anything that relied on a computer, from financial
markets to utilities. Governments duly prepared for disaster with the BBC
reporting that global preparations for the millennium bug were estimated to
have cost more than $US300 billion.

All for nought.

Nothing happened.

It was, as James Taranto wrote in The Wall Street Journal, the hoax of the
century.

Maurice Newman, who was chairman of the federal government's Y2K committee
told The Australian last week that "in pressing the urgency for compliance,
the committee members relied heavily on confirmatory bias. Most of this came
from so-called experts who had much to gain from creating a sense of alarm.
The consequence of widespread inaction was claimed to result in chaos and
systemic failure. As there was no alternative authoritative voice, this
became perceived wisdom and was certainly believed by the committee. As such
the Y2K phenomenon took on a life of its own."

Deja vu?

Preparing for the deluge of rising sea levels, we were treated to footage
last week from parliamentary question time starring Julia Gillard and her
gumboots.

Appropriately she was followed on ABC1 by Bananas in Pyjamas.

Could man-made climate change turn out to be the greatest hoax of the
present century?

Certainly, ordinary people are beginning to ask questions.

That the media didn't understand the situation (and you appear to have

Too many words, bonzo is a troll. Y2K and Climate change are unrelated.

Oh, yeah. I am aware of that. And not a very smart one.

Well, in as far as, if nothing was done about either then we'd all be in a
bad way, they are sort of related.

Of course, Bozo doesn't know about the smart people who averted the Y2K
problem and isn't smart enough to understand the climate change issue
either.

GARBAGE!
This is proved by ABSOLUTELY NOTHING happening in so-called "unprepared"
countries of the third world etc!
All it did was enrich the IT specialists, just as greenhoax is enriching the
likes of Gore, carbon traders etc.

Hey don't knock Y2K.
We made lots of money out of the scare tactics used back then.
Remember the claims?
Aircraft were going to fall out of the sky.
Radio and TV were going to fail.
All the space communication and positioning systems were going to
quit.
And on midnight I was on Firetalk with the fearful around the world
and laughing at the claims.
We got to the Millenium first. Its a dateline thing.
After about 3 hours even the most ardent believer had to accept that
they'd been sold a pup.

No, not at all. It was never going to be what the media beat it up to
be, but it was a major problem with a lot of systems which did not use
more than 2 digits to record a date. A lot of money and a lot of hard
work went into sorting these systems out that were going to have issues.
If this had not been done a much larger amount of money would've been
lost when those systems started shooting themselves in the foot when the
year clicked over.

I'd have to agree, this truly is a hoax, the evidence doesn't support
it, only the paranoia does.

You may be sure. You would be wrong. As I already said, vast amounts of

Of course the French & British Government did everything to hide the

credited with the worse Tuberculosis Pandemy thanks to his Vaccine

abominable vaccine poisons ! Hence although millions were buried in
both countries by Tumbrels fulls at night in common graves, nothing

Of course the Black Plagues of 1918 & 1958 demonstrate the fallacies
of such Jenner / Pasteur theories, and this is why the real symptoms
of the alleged Spanish & Asian Flu were carefully hidden. André

Subject: Re: Remember Y2K?

Actually non-compliant systems were much more of a problem than
non-compliant hardware, if a financial system only stored dates with 2
digits it was a disaster waiting to happen. Whilst it wasn't too big a
drama to replace these 2 digit dates with 4 digit dates (if the dates
were only stored with 2 digits it was already a given no record would go
back beyond 1900), but the much bigger problem was trawling through code
looking for anything that depended on the date being a 2 digit value and
recoding for that.

Hardware was merely a case of if it would not roll over to 2000
correctly (whether it clocked over to '84 or where-ever) it either
needed flashing if a flash was available, manual setting (or OS
correction which a lot of the OS's did without too much drama after
being patched to be aware of the issue) or in extreme cases replacing
(perhaps not the cheapest part of the problem to resolve, but certainly
the easiest).

In most cases it probably wouldn't have hurt all that badly, on a home
computer it would most likely be nothing more than an inconvenience. In
our case the fleet was aging anyway, so anything not detected as Y2K
compliant it was a good excuse for us to decide it was at end of life
anyway and replace it, since we work on 4 year replacement cycles most
of the non-compliant stuff was due for replacement by end of 1999
anyway. But with financial systems there was a lot of money waiting to
be lost.

As far as knowing of a system where it happened? Not where I worked, we
put a lot of time and effort into fixing the problem before it
eventuated, and we did come across numerous places where things would've
gone to shit if things had not been fixed. I speak purely from the
perspective of 'puters and apps running on them however, I have no real
idea of how Y2K affected control systems and other electronic gadgetary.

And lets not forget that sea levels have actually dropped in recent
decades, and have been much higher much longer ago.

You might want to change that claim :-)
Remember a lot of machines were running '95 and there was always the
Blue Screen of Death..
A lot of operators around December 1999-2000 blamed Y2K for their
finger troubles.

I would add that we need SMART PEOPLE to handle climate change as well. The
clowns in Canberra don't seem to be doing much.
And also like with Y2K I believe Climate Change won't be quite as bad as
they say. But we should still do something about it.
