Grrrr Is there any combination of Catalyst and MMC drivers that actually work?
I've uninstalled and reinstalled so many times I could puke... (ran the AtiCimUn.exe uninstaller, ran Driver Cleaner Pro, and even did the ol' hunt-n-peck through the registry to make sure all traces of ATI-whatever were gone. rebooted ad nauseum)
Specifically, everytime I try and use the TV tuner, I get the same "Unable to initialize" error - which is no help at all...
I've tried god-knows-how-many combinations going back to Catalyst 5.4 & MMC 9.03 - no luck
For whatever reason, I cant seem to get rid of the ATI T200 Unified AVStream Driver and revert back to the old WDM's - how is that accomplished?? Is that the problem?
> For whatever reason, I cant seem to get rid of the ATI T200 Unified > AVStream Driver and revert back to the old WDM's - how is that > accomplished?? Is that the problem?
Possibly. The T200 driver rendered my AIW useless. However, mine is 9600XT AGP so I don't know how much of my experience is applicable to your situation.
I use Catalyst 6.2 with MMC 9.06 (I also had good luck with 9.08 but decided to go with this one after my latest reinstall.) I have the WDMs apearing in my Device Manager, with (thankfully) no sign of the T200. The T200 starts showing up with Cat 6.3.
I don't know why you're seeing it with drivers as old as 5.4.
Before uninstalling all the ATI software you should boot in safe mode and remove all ATI-related devices fron Device Manager. Also make sure you have no "ghost" devices (for which the drivers are installed but do not show up because Windows think's they're not connected). See the MS article on how to do this : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315539
Note you need Catalyst 8.1 to use the above download. So install Catalyst 8.1 and MMC 9.16.
FYI. T200 Unified AVStream Driver *is* the WDM driver. T200 = Theater 200, which is the VIVO chip mounted on the AIW 2006 PCIe. The "unified" moniker denotes a merger of previous components like WDM Rage Theater Audio, WDM Rage Theater Video, WDM TV Audio Crossbar, etc. You will see a single T200 entry in Device Manager in place of 5-6 WDM entries. Click on the release notes for the WDM driver for more details: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/aiwradeonxip-xp

actually, the 6.2 catalyst drivers have the AT200 drivers as well... oh well, the search continues... thanks anyway

wow, that was the worst install yet.... after spending another whole day screwing around, looking for files, deleting and reinstalling ATI crap, the MMC was totally hosed after following the instructions I found here. - Modules I didn't want (DVD, File Player, etc) were installed anyway, even though I specifically said not to. All I wanted was TV and FM. Once installed, the Configuration tool contained entries for modules that were NOT installed, yet TV and FM were not to be found anywhere (Why am I not surprised?) - naturally, clicking on either the TV or FM icons in the program group did nothing. <sigh>
..and of course I wound up with that stupid white square in the upper left corner I've heard about. who writes this software, a buncha drug-impaired monkeys?
Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not blaming anyone, anyone other than ATI that is...
you know, it feels like I've been to dozens of sites over the last year trying to get a handle on this problem, and all of them have similar advise - usually a series of specific files, and an unbelievebly stupid series of specific steps that have to be followed in order to make it all work. and in all those pages, none of them agree - everybody has their own convaluted way pf patching together what works for them - it's as if you have to belong to an insider's club and know the secret handshake.
what's really funny is, I can just go download AmCap (one 237KB file << that's KB!!) from http://www.noeld.com/programs.asp?cat=video#AMCap , install that, and in about 2 minutes I have a working TV tuner, complete with a customizable channel guide, resizable windows and working recording functions, and IT WORKS.
what's wrong with this picture? or rather, WTF is wrong with ATI?

The secret handshake, at least with an AGP AIW, is to go to http://ati.com/install do everything exactly as it says. I've used every version from 9.01 to 9.16. Never had an install issue this couldn't fix. Unfortunately the first install doesn't always work. The method of install is way more complicated than it should be.Where most fail is not getting all steps done and in the proper order. I had to make a check list to make sure everything got done correctly. IIRC 13 steps for AIW&HDTV Wonder for 9.16.
If you had an AGP card like my AIW9600XT would suggest 9.06 and Cat6.1. Thought 6.3 was the first version for the Unified driver too but memory isn't that great. May also be that your not getting things clean.
Since you have a newer card I wouldn't use a release older than what came with the card. Do full installs until it's working then if you want to remove, do a Modify install. Very easy. Make sure you have the latest M/B chipset drivers and run dxdiag. Work on MMC. I usually try a couple of Repair installs before starting completely over. AmCap working should mean the drivers are installed correctly but wouldn't bet on it.

done all that - more times than I can remember - for nearly a year now. it worked for a while a year ago, but not since. one thing I DO know, any instructions found on ATI's site are useless...

Or ATI's drivers suck so much that they may work or not depending on: - which ATI card you have - which version of said card you have - what motherboard chipset you have - what other ATI software you have installed currently - what other ATI software you had installed previously - what 3rd party software you have installed currently - what brand of shampoo you use - how many vowels your middle name has

Ugh, that was unfortunate. Sorry for putting you through this. Never bother with Driverheaven posts again... Good to see you had found a better app, though.

That's Sir RenderMonkey (tm) to you... Seriously, though, notice how nVidia doesn't make this kind of combo graphics cards with tuner/capture capabilities. The nVidia product planners probably thought version-matching all the multimedia software (which progresses at a slower pace than the core graphics drivers) wasn't worth the headaches.

aw hell, not your fault, in fact this is exactly what I've come to expect with ATI products - at least they're consistent ;)

yea well, I think it's time to just to just purge the ATI demon and start over, chalk it up to a lesson learned. but still you can't help but wonder, with hardware and its accompanying drivers and software being soooo consistently bad - does anyone from ATI actually use their own products?

I feel your pain, brother (pours hexHead a shot of tequila)...
My Radeon 9800 AIW eventually got to the point where the tuner would work with any software BUT MMC, no matter what combination of drivers/MMC versions I tried. I went through all the same removal/cleaning steps you did, without success. Ultimately I decided to just buck up for a copy of BeyondTV, and then decided to get one of their bundles that included the Hauppauge HVR-1600 tuner card, which has both standard analog *and* ATSC hi-def tuners... now my AiW performs simple display-adapter duty on some older version of the Radeon drivers... and I occasionally use it to feed Windows Media Encoder to stream hockey games that my out-of-town buddy can't get on his local satellite feed :)
In the middle of all this, I discovered through other programs' complaints that DirectDraw isn't working on my system, and I suspect this may have been related to MMC's issues starting up. I have yet to get it working, through another extensive series of uninstall/clean/manually-clean/reinstall bullshit and fear it may come down to simple formatting my drive and installing everything clean... possibly with the addition of a new Nvidia card, as I've quite had it with anything ATI.

I emailed them once and asked them that exact question... the response assured me that ALL their workstations there use ATI cards, always with the latest drivers, and of course, everything always works just fine.
I'd been putting ATI cards in my family's computers for years, mostly because I really liked their OpenGL support... when I recently rebuilt my wife's computer, I put an nVidia card in it. I'm through with ATI forever.

heh, I know what you mean. it's a little like listening to those sales figures for Vista coming from Microsoft... what do you expect them to say?

well the AIW is in the garbage and I sprung for a GEForce 8500GT
plugged the sucker in and it immediately found and properly identified and configured not only my Acer 1916W widescreen, but also a 15" Polaroid flat screen HDTV that I have hooked up as a second monitor. What amazed me was how it found and identified that Polaroid, even referring to it by the correct model #. I don't think it was even turned on at the time.
A sad commentary of the times we live in when you find yourself being surprised, even amazed that a product actually works as advertised...
Seriously? You could at least offer to send it to someone if they pay you for the shipping. I'd take it if I had a comp that wasn't a relic (i.e. without PCI-E).

I wouldn't do that to somebody... trust me, it's better off in a landfill.

Would be embarrassing if someone else got it to work?

what no reply? damn, I was anxiously awaiting your step by step procedure to get this card to work perfectly. perfectly, hell, I'll settle for working as advertised.
> what no reply? > damn, I was anxiously awaiting your step by step procedure to get this > card to work perfectly. > perfectly, hell, I'll settle for working as advertised.
It is very possible that the card simply will not work due to some hardware/software configuration quirk present in your system, but that does not mean that no one else could get the card to work in their system. I seriously doubt that 100% of AIW2006 purchasers are unable to use their card's TV features.
As I said, I'd take the card off your hands if I had a system that would take it. Maybe it would work, maybe not, but I'd be willing to try. Tossing the card in the garbage is short-sighted, not to mention environmentally unfriendly.
And I think T Shadow has a point - if someone did take the card and got it working, it would probably sting you a little. I think that's part of the reason you're tossing away functional hardware.

Your saying ATI is junk but from where I sit your abilities are in question too and it could be other problems. I see a lot of people complaining that are using the same equipment I have and mine works. You seem competent but hardware failures are uncommon and the drivers seemingly installing correctly would make the odds even less. No ones watching you to see if your making any mistakes in the lengthy clean and reinstall procedure. It's easy to make mistakes. 13 steps for my AIW&HDTV Wonder using 9.16
It's been a while but in the past it wasn't uncommon for numerous people to come to the group and complain about problems with the %*/@ ATI and it would turn out they had a VIA chipset. Took a while for VIA to fix it and even longer for users to get the update. Probably went on for a year.
M$ DX9.0b had a problem the effected AIW PAL users. Long time to figure out. Fortunately most people got 9.0c quickly. Problem lasted months, at least, with everyone blaming ATI.
ATI should be berated for their crummy installation tools but it doesn't mean it can't be done by most. Your problem could be ATI's fault but I don't know that and neither do you. I've noticed the most popular products get the most criticism deserved or not. If your sure you've done all you can, have fun with your new hardware. Guess you still don't have a tuner though. Doesn't mean everyone should give up and blame ATI..

exactly. 13 steps - and what's truly amazing is that you find this somehow acceptable. FWIW, been there, done that, including multiple reformats and reinstalls of the OS over the last year. ..and it still doesn't work? - oops, I guess I must be stupid then... or like I said earlier, I guess I just don't know the "secret handshake"
13 steps huh? I bought a GEForce two days ago. Took exactly TWO steps: 1) replace POS ATI card with new NVidia card 2) turn on PC

Its true of Pinnacle products. I see endless bitching aboutrStudio 9/10/11 not working and crashing on people yet i have never had one issue with pinnacle software on my system. Then again my video editing system doesnt have have thetons of games and shareware and other crap most people dump onto their general purpose pc's

It means the software works, your system has a problem. A lot of people think you stick a card in a PC and it should work just like magic. They don't realize motherboards have chipsets and a BIOS and all of them aren't made by the same company. Sometimes they have problems. Other hardware and software in your computer can cause problems. ATI isn't responsible for everything in your computer.

Doesn't matter whether or not it's acceptable. Just the way it is. Have had the cards for almost 4 years. Wouldn't buy any analog only card now. I started with 9.01. Up until 9.06 using the CatUninstallier worked. Don't recall you saying you had a problem with the video and you still don't have a working tuner card or features that make them worthwhile and complicated. You've gained nothing. The fact that you don't see the difference doesn't speak well for you

I bought the AIW and HDTV Wonder at same time. Have had almost no problems with the AIW and would only have done installations when new versions came out if not for the HDTV Wonder. The 13 steps is only necessary when a regular uninstall/reinstall doesn't work. Shouldn't really be necessary to do it very often.
Really haven't had major problems with the HDTV Wonder since the 3rd version of DTV. Have gotten the experience from getting them to work together. It's worth some work to have a DVR and HDTV-DVR for this kind of money. I'm not aware of any tuner cards that no one has a problems with and didn't see any with better PQ or features when I was looking.
Only thing you've proven is you haven't been able to make it work on your system. . It may get expensive buying new hardware every time you have a problem.
