Say what?
The light was supposed to be on. The brakes were worn out and the sensor did
it's job. All is well with the universe -- except the whole Obama thing.
Anyway, the new sensor did not do what I thought it would do, reset the
light instantly. I did not know that the key had to be set to ON for some

I am guessing the battery powered key fob that opens the doors and
security system of the BMW .. has only about 12 more months of service life.
When you get a new key from the dealership (bout $200) there is a set in
proceedure involving the key sensor system and the car computer.

Does it sound like lack of compression? Sometimes if you run the car
cold for a few minutes in the winter and then switch off without giving
it enough time to warm up the oil is washed completely off the pistons
by the cold start mixture. It can take a few hours to fully wash
through with petrol lying in the cyls, but the result is you go to start

I third that.
The transmission is a known problem area and the car is well beyond the
warranty. If they give him a new transmission -- or fix the old one -- for
the cost of labor only, they're doing him a good thing.
Actually, a grand is a bit steep for the labor only, but if one had to buy a
new clutch for a manual-shift car, the cost would run to over a grand at the

No help on the door - my remote / lock has been intermittent for
years. It seems the closer I get to the car the more likely it will
work - but putting a new battery in doesn't improve the odds of it
working. Dunno on this one.

Three screws on each side of the glass panel. Lift the glass out and slide
the shade forward. 2 screws on 2 glides. Remove the screws and replace the

My neighbor's 325 (70,000 miles) auto transmission will not operate in
reverse. His BMW dealer is offering to give him a new transmission at no
cost, if he pays $1000 for labor to install. This seems unusual to me. Why
would BMW do this? And if they are giving him the transmission, why don't
they pay to install it also? Any experience with this?

White smoke could just be petrol fumes, but is usually an indication of
water.
Assuming it now runs OK then this could be wet fuel.
Or it could be the head gasket. Symptoms include - oil in the water (floats
on the top), water in the oil (emulsion looking like mayonaise around the

Brand new sensor from the stealership, and only connects one way, so that
was all good. I just expected the light to go off while driving, or
something. It did not occur to me that ON was the key to getting the light
to go out, I expected START to get the job done.
