Recent Course Activity: Several of you have been attending Leon Patel’s West African Funk classes featuring Djembe and Doun Douns. This 8 week course is in its final weeks, and I’m sure everyone who’s taken part has had their heads suitably mangled with the complex and syncopated phrasing of the material Leon’s been sharing with the group! I for one have really enjoyed getting my head back into Djembe grooves after such a long time with my Brazil-head on! Holly – editor
‘Afoxé Manchester’ - what happened next? To bring some positive energy and colour back to the Manchester streets, Global Grooves put on an ‘Afoxé’; a parade with over 80 drummers, dancers, singers, brass players and volunteers all working together to spread good vibes and provide a choreographed, inspiring performance for all who chose to follow! This fantastic event on Sat 1st August 2009 saw crowds dancing in the streets following our parade through Manchester City Centre, ending with a performance at Albert Square to mark the end of the Manchester Jazz Festival 2009. Based on the success of this year’s pilot ‘Afoxé’ event, we are currently in discussions about the development of this fantastic project for 2010.
