Subject: LIVERPOOL MERCURY Saturday March 22, 1890
NAVAL AND MILITARY TOURNAMENT.

To-day (Saturday) and on Monday next, another of those famous tournaments
for which Liverpool has a deserved reputation will take place.

A wonderfully attractive programme has been arranged, which will be carried
out by soldiers, naval men, cavalry, and champion athletes from all parts.

Challenge shields of great value will be competed for, that for the best
physique exciting great interest.

We understand the big local policeman from the Liverpool Town Hall has
entered, and also giants from other parts of the country.

The wrestling entries include the great Cumberland giants G. STEADMAN and G.
LOWDEN, who each weigh over 20 stone.

Champions in other branches of athletics are also going to compete at this
gathering, and a great crowd is expected.
