According to the UKPG: "News weekly The Economist is to become a new
rival for the Evening Standard tomorrow as it trials selling copies on
the streets of London."

I can see Associated Newspapers quaking in its boots.

Interesting strategy. I'd sooner read the Economist than the Standard
any day. And if someone tried to flog one to me a copy on the street I
might even be tempted - more so than having to go find a copy in a
shop, anyway.

Scott.

Read about this last week. How are they going to sell it at £3.90 or
whatever it is. Lots of change required.
Best mag going - still gets lots wrong but I love reading it
(subscriber).

Can't do any worse than News International's efforts using street
fighters to sell copies of The Times at the exits of Zone 1 tube
stations (something I've always viewed as daft - surely people, like
me, want to acquire and read a newspaper at the start of their journey
rather than on the last bit as they walk from a tube station exit to
their place of work).

I'm more intrigued by the notion of street-fighters selling
newspapers.  Should I take this literally ("Wanna fackin' paper,
right?  WHY AIN'T YOU LOOKIN' AT ME?").   Or is it slang for something/
one else?

Hi

The use of the term street fighter is in it's retail sense -
aggressive and/or opportunistic use of pavement-based selling to bump
up the sales or circulation figures.

Phones4U is a big user of the street fighting approach, sticking their
rude and irritating store staff out on the pavement with leaflets,
demo handsets and giveaways like a free cordless home phone if you
sign up for broadband.
